Who We Are
Platform Theater Company focuses on projects that are collaboratively created and connected to the community, bringing our audience an active opportunity to support a local service or broadening awareness of important work in our world.
To us it means collectively creating where everyone's artistic voice has merit and weight.
Here is the technical definition- From Devising Theater by Alison Oddey:
“Devised theater can start from anything. It is determined and defined by a group of people
working in collaboration who set up a series of Central Questions as the structure from which
to explore and experiment with ideas, images, or specific stimuli that might include music,
text, objects, paintings or movement. The process reflects a multi-vision made up of each
group member’s perception of the world assembled, edited, and re-shaped by each
individual’s contradictory experiences.”
The two major splits from traditional theater in this project are;
Our educational projects focus on empowering young people through creating theatre that reflects their experience. We also provide resume worthy training through teaching the working skills of technical theater. There is a strong, therapeutic element built into the experimental nature of the process which encourages a focus on building pro-social life skills such as communication, leadership and empathy. Collaborating with a group to accomplish a task is a high rewards activity, giving opportunities for new confidence, the ability to risk, and building new connections within the community.
